Things to Do and
See in Winderemere
- Log Cabin in White Cross Bay Leisure Park and Marina
in Windermere
The Lake
District National Park in the north-west of England
is the largest English National Park. Its 2,292 square
kilometres cover fells, dales, lakes and villages. The
National Park also includes part of the West Coast,
with beaches and tidepools.
People have been using the area for at
least 10,000 years. In 1951 it was designated as a National
Park to protect it for future generations.
Something for Everyone
Outdoor events in the Lake
District National Park reach their peak in August
with more than 120 LDNPA individual walks, talks and
special interest days taking place throughout the month
- all designed to delight schoolchildren and visitors
during the lazy days of high summer.
And with the added bonus of a three-day
bank holiday at the end of the month, the LDNPA events
team, and partner organisations have ensured that there's
no need for anyone to feel they have nothing to do
even on the off chance of there being an occasional
wet day along the way!
"August is such a popular and busy
month in the National Park. Not only do we have all
our visitors to cater for, we have the added bonus of
all the local families and children during the school
holidays," said LDNPA Education and Events Manager
Brenda Fishwick.
Details of many events are contained in
the Out and About in the National Park 2005 brochure
and on this website. And while lots of events are free
of charge and no advance booking is necessary, the popularity
of this high-season period has prompted Brenda to advise
people to check in advance - or arrive in good time
if attending a non-bookable event.
"We want everyone to enjoy our August
programme and to be able to take part in the particular
events that appeal to them. You can call in and see
us at one of our information centres and pick up a brochure,
or call us on 015394 46601" Brenda added.
Among the forthcoming August highlights
are:
· Buttermere Youth Hostel, 16 August,
8.30pm a talk and slide show on the work of the
Lake District Volunteer Rangers;
· Ullswater Steamer Pier, 16 August, 7.00pm
an evening cruise along beautiful Ullswater with a National
Park Ranger as your guide;
· Keswick Mountain Bikes Centre, 18 August 10am
off-road cycling in fantastic scenery, particularly
suitable for youngsters with adult supervision and those
that are new to the sport; and
· Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole,
17 and 24 August, Garden Adventure for children discovering
mysteries and secrets of the woodlands.
And then when September arrives, and heralds
the first appearances of autumn, there are another 50
special events planned for everyone during that month.
Just turn up!
For most Lake District National Park Authority
events, just turn up on the day. As numbers are limited,
please arrive early to avoid disappointment. If you
need to book in advance, 'Booking Essential' and the
number to call will appear in the Event description.
